Is it not fair to make a fair wage anymore?

I have to ask this question, seriously. No sarcasm. That’s difficult for me.

Is it not fair to make a wage? I mean more then a poverty level one that is?

As you know by now I am a Town Car Driver, a licensed Limousine Driver.

I do not make much, no wheres near what most even average people make.

Middle Class? No wheres near Middle Class. No wheres near.

So, recently I had a regular client ask me for a ride to a particular location in Tampa from St. Petersburg. I informed the client it was an $85 ride. I had a feeling the client would not go for it.  This is a very fair fare in this market for our type of reserved service and many others are higher. We are properly licensed, insured and full level 2 backgrounds checked which include finger printing.

This $85 fare will take me approx 2-2.5 hours to complete and get back home. I get 50% of that fare plus tip and pay gasoline, tolls, credit card fees, car washes etc. The company I drive for maintains the car.  In this case I would then receive $42.50 half fare + 17.00 tip, if this customer was to tip their usual 20%.  So, $59.50 – $11.00 (gas) – .75 toll – 2.38 cc fees = $45.37 total. (not counting the complimentary snacks and beverages)

If that is the only order I received for the day, I would make $45.37 for the day.

It takes a minimum of 3 of those to barely pay my bills. Many days I do get 1 or 2.

So……this customer(who I have provided discounted service to for over one year) tells me they just cannot do the $85 fare as they must stick to a budget. This customer lives very well. Very well. (not knocking it, simply stating a fact)

I advise, I understand and ask if I can get them a taxi as it would be $10 cheaper.

They respond with no…..but thank you….will find a different alternative.

Their alternative is Uber.

So I respond and say…… ohhhhh noooooo you are going to take Uber aren’t you?!!

The customer responds……”Sorry, it’s like $35, you left me no choice.”

Really??

So, I was offended and flabbergasted as I have cut this customer deals for a long time now and provided excellent service to them and their family.

$35.00?? Really??  So you are asking me to cut my wage more than half??? Seriously?

Don’t I deserve to make some sort of decent wage? I provide an excellent service and provide complimentary snacks and beverages and go out of my way to please my customers. I work hard. Real hard.

This client usually takes our services to the airport for $55 (our regular rate is $65)…..this day the client was going a further distance and wanted the rate to be near that $35.

I drive 45 minutes just to pick up the client. We do not sit around town like taxi’s or Uber etc. We are a reservation based luxury Town Car Service. We take really great care of our customers.

This client was asking me to now….drive 45 minutes to pick them up…..then drive another hour to their destination…..and then it is another 45 minutes back home.

So now…..the client was asking me to go from making $45.37….. to making 50% of $35…..in other words…. 17.50 + 7.00 tip – $11.00 (gas) – .75 toll – .63 cc fees for a total = $12.12 for 2.5 hours…..thats $4.84 per hour.

The Uber driver might make about $16.00 on that trip. Annnnnnd they have to maintain their car!  No one is making a wage at this point. No one. Not us, not the Uber driver…..No one.

And that is Cool?

Really?

Thank you for listening.

The Privilege Was All Mine

One day last week, I received an order to pickup a named female at a specific address and take her to the airport. When I called her to touch base I could hear in her voice that she was under stress. She instructed me to pick her up on a specific corner & cross street. When ever that takes place it is always a red flag to some degree. Either way, it raises our senses.

I arrived at the corner and seen no one. I looked down the street as I pulled up and seen a female standing 2 blocks down. I went to that location and sure enough it was my customer.

She picked up her bags and we placed them in the trunk.  I could see in her eyes that she was tired and stressed…..sad mostly. As she got into my car the rest unfolded.

She had come to Florida to start anew.  Bottomline, it did not work out and the situation was far from pleasant.

As we drove she began to cry…to sob. I felt bad for her as I could relate to her feelings as I have been there too many times in the past myself.

Sooooo, I exchanged my horror stories with her and let her know that it happens to men too.

:-))!

I assured her she will find the “one” she is looking for as I did…and if I did, she sure will.  She just has to pray for it and be extremely specific in what she desires.

During the rest of our ride to the airport we laughed and laughed…we laughed hard and over and over again.  She laughed at the pleasure of hearing the misery of my past….I laughed just as hard along with her.

I could now see in my rear view mirror that she was laughing so much she was crying from that!  LOLOL

When we got to the airport, she thanked me for the ride…..told me she could not believe how calm she now was, because of how bad she felt while waiting for me to pick her up…….calm, she was now calm…..she then thanked me again and gave me a hug…….yep…..gave me a hug……….

So evidently she had an awesome ride………and so did I.…….

The Privilege Was All Mine!

Jesus once again protecting and directing. Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of an awesome day.

:-))!

It’s A Small World After All……

So, ok, I drive an Executive Car as a chauffeur in the Tampa Florida area. I meet people from all over the world.

When I was young, in elementary school and high school I spent a couple of short stints living in Canada in Windsor, Ontario and in Toronto, Ontario. I am from the USA.

When I lived in Toronto I went to Sir Wilfred Laurier Collegiate Institute (high school) in 1975-1976.

As I pick up customers to bring them from or to the Tampa airport I always wonder if I will meet someone I know from one of the schools I attended in Canada.

Well, it finally happened…….twice!

A few weeks ago I picked up a customer from Clearwater Beach going to the airport to pick up her daughter.  As we spoke I found she was from Toronto, from Scarborough, the same area I lived in.  As we spoke more we found we had gone to the same school!  Sir Wilfred Laurier!  It was cool, very cool. Small world.

Then again, this last Wednesday, I picked up 3 women going from St. Pete Beach, FL to the Tampa Airport. When they got into the car I stated to one of them that she looked familiar, they all chuckled and stated…..”OH we are not from here!”  It was funny.

I asked, well where are you from?  They said Canada….Toronto Canada.  I stated I had lived there also and the one asked where I had lived. When I stated Scarborough, Ontario they all were now shocked and laughed sayong thats where they were from and lived now.  THE BEST PART???!!  One of them was actually a teacher at my school, Sir Wilfred Laurier in the 60’s, anothers Mother was a teacher when I was there and the third lady????  SHE actually lived in my very same neighborhood that my family lived in when I was there!!!

WOW!!  It was sooo cool!  They knew one of my teachers by the name of Diane Lang, my Math teacher…she was awesome by the way.  They also knew my band teacher of who I just am not able to recall his name.

Then they told me about the upcoming Sir Wilfred Laurier Collegiate Institute’s 50 Year Reunion!  I laughed and told them I actually got the notice from Classmates.com!!  THAT was hilarious! We all got a laugh out of that! Then they asked if I recalled when the reunion was going to be because they had not heard yet!  LOLOL….is that not funny???!

So I tried to find the email about it and of course I could not, figuring I had deleted it since I would not be able to attend.  The ladies thought it would be funny to hear about the dates for the reunion from someone who had gone to the school and was now in Tampa Florida.  I thought so too! We got a great laugh out of that thought.

Soooooo, after I dropped them off at the airport it was driving me crazy and I looked frantically for the email and found it.  I parked in the parking garage at the airport and went in to find them inside the airport. I located them still at the ticket counter and walked up to them….they were of course surprised to see me. I stated the dates for the reunion and showed them the email!  It was awesome and we all laughed.  They got a big kick out of it!

Another great day on the job as a chauffeur in Tampa Bay Florida…..another great day of laughs!

It’s A Small World After ALL :-))!

Cannot beat that!

A Simple bag of Chips…..Lots of Laughs!

Once again, this last Friday was full of laughter…….all because of a simple bag of Lays Classic Potato Chips.

It was simply awesome. Another reason and one of the main reasons I LOVE what I do.

20150117_1613261.jpg

The basket pictured here is full of snacks, chocolates …….and Lays Chips for my customers to enjoy. One of the reasons I do this is because of the reactions I get from the customers when they see it.  It is simply so much fun.  Another reason is because it gives my customers a small snack to take with them on a plane if they want to, They are there for anyone.  No matter how much the fare is, no matter if they tip me or not.  It is more about the experience and the fun for all of us.  :-))!

Typically, I will encourage my customer to take a snack…..so that the person or persons around them will be jealous on the plane!  Hehehehe :)

This last Friday, one of those moments came to light as one of my favorite customers shared her story with me of her bag of chips on the plane.  She could not wait to tell me and I could not wait to hear it once she had stated she had a story for me. I was already chuckling as she said that because I could just imagine. :)

Two weeks prior, I had taken her to the airport, dropped her off and I suggested she take something for the flight as I always do…..she said….”ya know Lance….I think I will take a bag of chips.”  I said….yeah and rustle the bag a bit and eat each one slowly!  She thought that was a great idea and we got a little chuckle out of it and off she went. I wasn’t sure she would, just thought she would eat them and that would be that.

Now, Friday, I pick her up on her return flight into Tampa. We get in the car and we are not even out of the parking garage and she is bursting at the seems like that bag of chips to tell me her story.  That part alone was hilarious.  She is very funny anyway normally so this was even better :)….I was already laughing. I still am even as I write this.

The Story of Laughs!

Customer: So Lance, ya know those bag of chips?

Me: Yes……

Customer: Lance that bag of chips was so puffed up and huge like a pillow when I went to open them on the plane!  I rustled the bag a bit and people started looking.

Remember this Lays Commercial below, with the little girl?  This is basically how the story is…..and how I can see my customer …..ohhhh man I am laughing out loud as I write this,,,,lololol….I don’t know maybe you had to be there but man it was funny! Still is!

Lays Chips Commercial

Customer: Lance….that bag of chips being so puffed up…..POPPED!  It made a POP SOUND when I opened it!! (as she laughs)

Me: AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA……..AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…..doubled over LOLOL!

Customer:  And Lance……..the aroma of the chips coming out……people were looking….you could tell they were wondering where I got the bag of chips.  Oh and the flight attendants were not able to get out of their seats due to some turbulence, so they could not pass out snacks!! (as she laughs)

Me: OMG! …..AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA   AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA    AHAHAHAHAHA ( having a hard time breathing at this point! lolol)

Customer: So Lance….now I have the bag open and people are again looking…..wondering….smelling….(as she says with a smirk in her voice, which made me laugh even more!)

Me: DId you eat each one slowly??  (laughing as I asked)

Customer: Ohhhhh I did Lance……it must have taken me an hour to eat that little bag!

Me:  Out of control laughing at this point…….tears running out of my eyes!! I could just see her doing it….making each customers mouth water for something salty. lolololol…..Can you see the little girl in that commercial???  Ohhhh mannnn I sure could and I loved it!

Customer: And then after i was done I continued to fold the bag over and over making a slight crinkling sound……(as she laughs)

Me:  More and more….continued laughs……huge laughs!

Customer:  Lance, who would know that a simple little bag of chips would provide so much entertainment.

So, as I drove on, we talked more about it on the way back to her home, we both were talking about that very point that she made.  That simple bag of chips provided her a snack, (one of her favorites) and provided her a really strong inside chuckle to herself while on a business flight.  It also provided her and I additional entertainment….HUGE entertainment as I drove her home. I cannot tell you how priceless that is and was.  My “job” is driving an Executive Car Service Town Car…..I do it because I love it. I do it because of customers like this one.

All the snacks and beverages in my car I provide personally and pay for at no charge to the customer.  Can I put a price on that bag of chips??  Absolutely Not!

A simple bag of chips.  Priceless.

Thank you Mrs. “C”! Thank you for sharing that story with me!

You made my month!!  Probably longer!  lolol!

I will tell this story for a long long time.

Thank you for being such an awesome person and customer!

:-))!
