The First Traffic Light….Kinda Cool

Kind of a cool article on the First Traffic Light

When was the first traffic light installed? Traffic light’s 101st anniversary celebrated

Today’s Google doodle depicts the first electric traffic lights which were installed 101 years ago. Read our fun facts to find out where and by whom they were placed

They are the bane of impatient motorists and are responsible for thousands of road rage incidents across the globe.

Now the humble traffic light has been honoured with a Google Doodle to celebrate its 101st Anniversary on Wednesday:

Google’s traffic light doodle

The first ever traffic lights were unveiled in London in the late 19th century, and placed outside the Houses of Parliament.

Non-electric and gas-operated, police officers had to work the lights by hand in a bid to control vehicles crossing on nearby Bridge Street, Great George Street and Parliament Street.

The project was short-lived after an explosion in 1869 when a leak in gas lines passing under the device exploded, and seriously injured the police officer operating the lights.

More than thirty years later an American enjoyed greater success with some electronic lights that focused on a similar – and now internationally recognisable – system of red and green lights.

Vienna replaced pedestrian traffic light figures with gay couples

Lester Wire, a former detective in Salt Lake City, came up with the revolutionary idea in 1912, and traffic lights began springing up across the United States shortly after.

He was not the only American to come up with the idea. Garrett Morgan, an inventor from Ohio, vowed to improve traffic safety after witnessing a serious accident on the roads.

He applied for a patent for a man-powered traffic control device using a crank in 1922, but his invention is said to have never reached the prototype stage.

The west German city of Dortmund introduced ‘green women’ pedestrian traffic lights in bid to redress sexism

It has been speculated that local authorites were relucant to invest in a man-powered set of traffic signals because it would require cities to hire someone to staff it all day – whereas the emergent electric lights seemed far cheaper in comparison.

The doodle depicts the world’s first electric traffic light to be installed and put into major use in Clevland, Ohio, on August 5 1914.

Placed on the corner of Euclid Avenue and East 105th Street, it would have been a chaotic affair, with bicycles and cars as well as horses competing for domination of the road.

Doodle illustrator Nate Swinehart said that he did not include the yellow light outlining as they were not introduced until later to regulate the traffic more effectively.

In 1920 bells were added to traffic light systems to alert motorists when the lights were about to change – they were later replaced with the amber light now seen on all traffic light systems today.

VJ celebrations in Oxford Circus in London, 1945 (PA)

It wasn’t until 1990 that countdown timers were introduced, allowing pedestrians to judge whether there is enough time for them to cross the road before the lights turn red.

Perhaps the most impressive traffic light specimen ever to be unleashed on the world’s streets was the Traffic Light Tree, created by French sculptor Pierre Vivant in 1998.

The imposing eight-metre tall tree consists of 75 sets of lights and has become a favourite spot for tourists in London.

These days, traffic lights are highly sophisticated, incorporating special light symbols for bikes, trams and buses. Some also feature signals that are interruptible, giving priority to emergency vehicles via transmitters that send radio waves, infrared signals, or strobe light signals that are received by a sensor on or near the traffic lights.

While most countries have become dependent on traffic lights over the decades, some places are happy to do without them. In Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa, a huge intersection runs smoothly without a single traffic light.

No Shows At Tampa Airport….Or Anywhere

Have you ever perhaps ordered a car service or taxi to pick you up at the airport or any location and then simply not show up without calling and cancelling your order?

We all understand, things happen

Maybe you miss your flight, or decided to ride with a friend

Or maybe even decided to take a different flight AND ride with a friend, or another service.

Simply put, maybe your plans simply changed.

That is OK.

20150425_003916

Here is what happens when you “No-Show” a driver

The driver most likely drove quite aways to pick you up, in many cases it could be over 20 miles, especially here in Pinellas County Florida when picking you up at the Tampa International Airport.

In addition, that driver may have waited at the airport for you for over an hour, way over an hour.

When you do not show up, without calling to cancel, that driver now has spent 30-40 minutes driving to pick you up, waited for you for at least one hour, possibly had to pay a minimum of $4.00 in parking, possibly paid tolls, and spent the gas to get there.

Now, he/she drives back to where they came from….in our case home or another part of the city from a previous order.  Either way it is a long way back and all we did was spend time and money.

Bottom Line?

Please Please Please…..

We all understand, things happen…..

Please be considerate and call and cancel if you do not need your driver to pick you up as planned. It will help us greatly and we will actually appreciate it!

IF you do not….quite honestly the only one you are hurting is the driver

ALL US DRIVERS THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Hey Tampa Bay! Is Your Taxi or Car Service Legal?

If you are taking a Taxi or Car Service in the Tampa Bay Area it must be legally operated and licensed.

If it isn’t…..

It isn’t Cool, It Isn’t “Rad” or “Bad”, “Sick” or “Sweet”

Possibly, Very Possibly….It isn’t Safe

It’s Wrong….On numerous levels

EXAMPLE:

In Pinellas County, FL the St. Petersburg/Clearwater side of Tampa Bay, the following is an example of the types of Permit/Licensing Stickers which you should see on the Taxi or Car Service you are hiring.
In the picture below, which is the Towncar I drive for BATS Taxi & Towncar Service you will notice 3 Permit Stickers on the rear windshield. You may click on the photo for a larger image. There will also be some Permit Stickers on the front windshield.  Below I will show you all of them for our area.

20150623_203346

Close up of the rear Permit Stickers

*White Permit Sticker with 9/30/15 is for the City of St. Petersburg, FL/Pinellas

**Green Permit Sticker with the Plane is for the Tampa International Airport

***Yellow Permit Sticker is for operating legally in Hillsborough County

20150716_184535

Front Windshield Permit Stickers

***Notice the Yellow Permit Sticker below states that it is “Only Valid With Current Annual Inspection Sticker On Rear Window.”

Legal vehicles and Services MUST be Inspected and Certified Safe by Law

20150718_004840

20150717_234008

Legally Licensed, Background Checked and Approved Drivers

Below are my personal ID Badges for Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties

IF, your Driver does not display or if they cannot show you these badges for the area or areas he/she serves, then they simply are not operating legally…..Period.

ID Badges and Permit Stickers must be renewed yearly

Simply having the badges is not enough….they MUST go along with the Company you are driving for or contracted to, which is on file with the proper local authorities.

IF, your driver has these ID Badges but are transporting you in their personal vehicle, they are not legal.

Again, they must have valid Permit Stickers like those pictured above.

Think about that. If there is no paper trail….there is no accountability

(I am not saying they look good I am saying they are legal)

:)

Below is my Hillsborough County Public Transit Commission ID Badge. Background check is performed by the Hillsborough County Sheriffs Department and we the driver pays the $100 fee.

20150611_161057

Below Is my ID Badge as issued by the St. Petersburg, FL Police Department

Background Check performed by the St. Petersburg Police Department and we the drivers pay the $90 fee.

20150611_161330

Bottom line…..

If the Taxi or Car Service you are in are not legal….

If your driver isn’t legal……

  No paper trail…….No accountability.

Think About That

Thank you for stopping by, Lance Greene
